<p><strong>Power Analogy</strong></p>
<p>Imagine a dark room with three treadmills and three distance runners. The runners are wearing special shoes that briefly light up with each step.</p>
<p><strong>Single-phase power</strong> is when one person is running while the others stand by. When a step is taken, the room lights up for a brief moment. In the moments between steps, the room stays dark.</p>
<p><strong>Three-phase power</strong> is when all three people are running simultaneously. They work together to make sure at least one runner's foot is down at all times to keep the room lit.</p>
<p>In this analogy, each runner represents a hot wire of a power distribution system and the light intensity represents the phase voltage.</p>
<p><strong>Power Distribution to Server Racks</strong></p>
<p>Electrical power is delivered from a generator to the electrical grid to industrial buildings in the form of <em>alternating</em> current (AC) three-phase power. Industrial buildings like data centers must decide how to further distribute this power to the IT equipment on server racks. At the most basic level, there are two options:</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;">Option #1: Distribute single-phase power to the racks. This typically involves power distribution through a single LINE (hot) wire and a NEUTRAL wire.</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;">Option #2: Distribute three-phase power to the racks. This typically involves power distribution through three LINE wires, one for each phase, and in some cases a NEUTRAL wire.</p>
<p>In North America, the LINE wires in a "208V" service typically have an oscillating voltage between -170V to +170V peak-to-peak with respect to the NEUTRAL wire. When discussing AC circuits, voltage RMS (the equivalent DC voltage) is used instead of peak voltages. For example, an AC voltage with 170V peak is referred to as 120VAC (Voltage Alternating Current).</p>
<p>In the single-phase plot below, positive voltages are represented by the left shoe, negative voltages by the right shoe. Notice both shoes provide the same amount of light at the peaks. In other words, the voltage polarity does not matter. Both are useful.</p>

<p>Single-phase rack power distribution units (PDUs) are designed to receive and distribute single-phase power to IT equipment. These PDUs are internally wired to deliver 120VAC (LINE-to-NEUTRAL) directly to the outlets. Equipment connected to these outlets will operate with 120VAC.</p>
<p>In comparison, a three-phase system has three LINE wires each measuring 120VAC with respect to the NEUTRAL wire. The plot below shows three-phase power with the LINE voltages overlaid. Notice how each LINE voltage is shifted in time. </p>

<p>Three-phase rack PDUs are designed to receive three-phase power at the input and distribute three groups of single-phase outputs to the IT equipment. These PDUs are often wired in a delta configuration producing a higher voltage RMS at the outlets at 208VAC to 240VAC. Equipment connected to these outlets will operate with these higher voltages.</p>
<p>Higher voltages are achieved by internally wiring the outlets LINE-to-LINE instead of LINE-to-NEUTRAL. What happens when two runners have shoes that are lit up at the same time? The intensity of the light in the room increases. </p>
<p>The combined light is illustrated by the yellow line in the plot below. The plot is an example of an outlet that is wired LINE1-to-LINE2 which produces 208VAC. This translates to more power and higher efficiency for the connected equipment.</p>

<p><span>The power on sequencing of a smart PDU ensures that equipment connected to it receives power in a specific order and at a specific time interval to prevent electrical overload and damage to the equipment.</span></p>

For example, if a data center experiences a power outage, the smart PDU can be programmed to power on the most critical equipment, such as servers hosting essential applications, before other equipment.</span></p>

Power On Sequencing: Maximizing Efficiency and Reliability with Smart PDUs

<p>Smart power distribution units (PDUs) are becoming increasingly popular in data centers and other mission critical environments. These devices provide advanced power management capabilities, real time monitoring of power usage, remote control of outlets, and automatic alerts for power related issues. Role management is particularly useful for smart PDUs because it allows organizations to control who has access to critical power management functions and ensure power is being used efficiently and effectively.</p>

<p>With SynLink PDUs, role management is done with creating custom user roles, and associated users with that role. When creating a custom user role, an administrator will be able allow users with that role to view/edit various settings, view/switch select outlets, view power consumption, and have access to other functions of the PDU.</p>

Power Distribution Guide for Power Redundant Servers

<p>Dynamic DNS allows you to conveniently access your SynLink PDU with an easy, memorable domain name. We will discuss these terms in depth in the following sections, followed by instructions on how to setup Dynamic DNS on your home router.</p>
<p><strong>Prerequisite:</strong></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;">1. Basic concept of IP Addresses (i.e. Public IP vs. Local IP). Here's a short primer <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7_-qWlvQQtY&amp;ab_channel=GeorgeNisbet" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">video</a> on the topic of IP addresses.</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;">2. Port Forwarding. See this previous <a href="https://www.synaccess.com/guides/how-to-setup-port-forwarding-for-synlink-pdus" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">guide</a> for details.</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;">3. The second half of this tutorial assumes that you have a router with built-in DDNS client. If your router does not have a DDNS client, see the section "﻿Routers without Built-in DDNS Support" for links on how to setup a stand-alone client.</p>
<p>To understand the need for Dynamic DNS, we first need to review DNS and domain names. </p>
<h3><span>What is a DNS? What is a Domain name?</span></h3>
<p>DNS stands for Domain Name Systems. It is a system created to solve a simple problem: it is difficult to remember multiple IP addresses of your favorite websites. A DNS server accomplishes this by keeping a "directory" of domain names, where each domain name is mapped to an IP address. An example of a domain name is "synaccess.com" or "google.com".</p>
<p>There are many free and public DNS servers. For example, Google's DNS server is at 8.8.8.8 while Cloudflare's is at 1.1.1.1.</p>
<p>A DNS server's "directory" is analogous to your phone's contacts list or an address book. With an address book, you don't have to remember your friend Steve's phone number. Instead, all you have to remember is his name in order to make call.</p>
<p>In a similar way, a DNS let's you access a website by only using it's domain name (i.e. synaccess.com). When you type in "synaccess.com" on your web browser, your computer will ask a DNS server, "what is the IP address of synaccess.com?". The DNS server looks up "synaccess.com" in its directory and gives your browser the IP address assigned to that domain. Then, your browser proceeds to communicate with a web-server with that IP. </p>
<h3>SynLink PDU is a Web-Server</h3>
<p>SynLink PDUs have a built-in web-server, meaning you can access it's web interface simply by typing in it's IP address on your web browser. This method works as long as your laptop and the PDU are in the same network.</p>
<p>If you need to access the PDU outside of your home network, you'll need to setup port forwarding (as discussed in this <a href="https://www.synaccess.com/guides/how-to-setup-port-forwarding-for-synlink-pdus">guide</a>). Then to access the PDU, you will need to remember the public IP of your home network. Here lies the  problem: not only it is difficult to remember IP addresses, your home network's IP address can change often and without notice.</p>
<h3>Why Setup Dynamic DNS?</h3>
<p>Your home network's public IP address changes often. This is not an uncommon occurrence because assigning a static, non-changing public IP is expensive. The frequency in which this change happens varies among Internet Service Providers. As a result, those who want to access web services hosted within their home network will have a hard time trying to keep track of their IP, especially if changes happen every week or so.</p>
<p><span>This is where Dynamic DNS becomes useful. Rather than having to remember a set of seemingly random numbers that is your public IP address, a domain name is instead assigned to your public IP. More importantly, when your public IP changes, a Dynamic DNS client will automatically re-assign your domain name to the new IP address.</span></p>
<h3>What do I need to setup Dynamic DNS?</h3>
<p>You need a Dynamic DNS service provider and a DDNS Updater Client to successfully implement DDNS.</p>
<p><strong>Dynamic DNS Service Provider</strong></p>
<p>Third-party DDNS services like NoIP, FreeDNS, or Dyn will provide the domain you want. Some require a small fee but most give you one domain for free.</p>
<p><strong>DDNS Updater Client</strong></p>
<p>This is a client software that runs inside your home network. This software is responsible for notifying the DDNS service that your public IP has changed and thus re-mapping your domain name to the new IP address. </p>
<p><strong>Routers with Built-in DDNS Support</strong></p>
<p>Many of today's routers make it easy to implement DDNS. Many have built-in DDNS updater client while others also provide a DDNS domain for free. I highly suggest that you use a router that have a built-in DDNS updater client because it eliminates the need of requiring another computer to host the client. The rest of this tutorial assumes that your router have a built-in DDNS client.</p>
<p><strong>Routers without Built-in DDNS Support</strong></p>
<p>If you're router does not support DDNS, you will need to setup a dedicated computer that is ideally always on inside your home network. If you are running a Windows system, follow this <a href="https://www.noip.com/support/knowledgebase/installing-the-windows-4-x-dynamic-update-client-duc/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">guide</a>. For Ubuntu-based systems, follow this <a href="https://serdima.wordpress.com/2018/04/23/tutorial-updating-dynamic-dns-with-ddclient/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">guide</a>. </p>
<h3>Steps to Setup Dynamic DNS</h3>
<p>The following are general steps to setup DDNS on your router. The specific router you use may slightly vary but the generic instructions should still apply.</p>
<ol>
<li>Go to your router's web interface and find out the DDNS services that it supports. The Dynamic DNS section is usually under "Network" or "Advanced". </li>
<li>Sign up for an account with any of the DDNS service that your router supports. Pick a domain that you like. You'll be provided with a username, password and a domain name. Take a note of this information and keep it secure.</li>
<li>Go back to your router's web interface and enter the information provided to you by your DDNS provider. Apply the changes and confirm it's a success. </li>

<h3>What is Network Bridging?</h3>
<p>Network Bridging allows you to share your PDU's internet connection to a networked device. This is useful in situations where you have limited Ethernet Ports and you have no room for another switch/router. It can also be used for network redundancy where you need to re-direct data packets through another network path.</p>
<p>On a typical setup, the PDU's primary network interface is connected to a larger network (i.e. the internet). Meanwhile, a networked device (i.e. a desktop computer) is connected to the PDU's secondary network interface. After setting up bridged mode, the PDU will forward network packets from one interface to the other, effectively sharing PDUs internet connection.</p>
<p>This feature is sometimes referred to as <strong>Ethernet Passthrough</strong> because the PDU can be seen as passing through the Ethernet connection to another device.</p>

<h3>Enable/Disable Bridge Mode on Event Triggers</h3>
<p>When used with SynLink's Automation features, you can automatically enable and disable bridge mode based on a variety of Event Triggers such Network-Loss, Power-Loss, Circuit Breaker trip, etc.</p>
<p>The example below shows how you can enable Bridged mode when it detects network loss. Network loss is detected using AutoPing.</p>

<p>Port Forwarding allows computer or other networked devices in  local area network (i.e. LAN) to access devices on the public, wide area network (i.e. WAN, internet), and vice versa.</p>
<h2>Short Background:</h2>

<p>By default, in order to access SynLink PDUs web interface, you need to use a laptop or computer connected to the same local network as that of your PDU. For example, if your PDU is on your home network, your laptop/computer also needs to be on that same network. If you move your laptop/computer to a different network, say a coffee shop or your office, then you no longer will have access to your PDU. </p>
<p>Port Forwarding solves that problem by allowing devices on the public, wide area network (i.e. internet) to access devices on your local area network (i.e. home network). </p>

<h2>How to Setup Port Forwarding?</h2>
<p>First, you need to assign the PDU an IP address that won't change. You can do so by setting a Static IP or by Reserving a DHCP IP address. Using the latter option is typically preferred since it prevents you from using used IP addresses. If using a Static IP, make sure that the IP address is currently not or will not be used. See the Quick Start Guide for instructions on how to setup Static IP.</p>
<h4>Reserve DHCP IP address</h4>
<p><strong>Step 1: Set your SynLink PDU to DHCP mode.</strong></p>

<p>On the front panel LCD Display, navigate to <strong>Network</strong> and change the Mode to <strong>DHCP</strong>. You should see IP address automatically change. <em>Take note of that IP address and the MAC Address.</em></p>
<p>Validate that you can access the PDU's web interface typing in the IP address on your favorite web browser's address bar. You should be greeted with a login screen where you can type in your credentials. By default, the user name is admin and the password is also admin.</p>

<p><strong>Step 2: Reserve SynLink PDU's IP address on your Router</strong></p>
<p>Your router's IP address and login information can be found on the router's label.</p>
<p>In this example, we will use TP-LINK wireless router as an example. Open a web browser and type in the address bar the IP address of your router. For TP-LINK routers, this is usually http://192.168.0.1 or http://tplinklogin.net. Then press Enter.</p>
<p><em>Note: Contact your Router manufacturer if you are unable to access or log-in to your router.</em></p>
<p>Click DHCP-&gt;Address Reservation on the left side and click Add New button.</p>

<h4>Setup Port Forwarding</h4>
<p>Now that you have the PDUs IP address reserved, it's time to setup Port Forwarding on your router. </p>
<p><strong>Step 1: Login to your Router and locate the Port Forwarding Options</strong></p>
<p>The Port Forwarding page varies for every router. It may be buried under categories such as Advanced, NAT Forwarding, Wireless, or Network.</p>

<strong>External Port</strong> - This is the Port that devices from external networks will use to access your internal network. Use ports that are available and are not frequently used by other applications. We recommend using the following ports depending on which protocol you are forwarding:</li>

<h2>Test your Port Forwarding Setup</h2>
<p>Take note of your router's public IP address. This is the IP address assigned to you by your ISP (Internet Service Provider). You can find this on your router's web interface, or by simply going to <a href="https://www.whatismyip.com/">https://www.whatismyip.com/</a>.</p>
<p>Then, using a device that is on an external network, type in http://[YourPublicIP]:[Port] on a web browser. An example would is <span style="text-decoration: underline;">http://211.25.22.52:2095/</span>. </p>

The IP address of the gateway is usually the IP of the router, which can be found on the router's label. It is set to 192.168.1.1 by default whereas your Gateway/Router IP could be different. For example, certain ISP set their Router's IP to 192.168.1.255. </span></p>
<h4><span>Additional troubleshooting steps:</span></h4>

<h2>What is out-of-band access?</h2>
<p>Out-of-band refers to the way you can access your device “outside” of its typical (in-band) channels. Servers, routers, switches, miners, desktop PCs, etc. are typically connected to the local network and the internet via an Ethernet port. HTTP requests and other types protocols must physically go through this channel. In most cases, an Ethernet port or WIFI card is referred to as the in-band access, because it is the primary channel of communication to the device. <strong>Out-of-band access is any method of communication that does not rely and is independent of primary channel of communication.</strong></p>
<h2>Why do you need remote, out-of-band access?</h2>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Without an out-of-band access, you are limited to two ways you can access your host. First is the traditional method which is discussed above. While the first method is typically robust, it is not uncommon for equipment/hosts to malfunction and lose connection to the network. In some cases, legacy devices simply do not have network access. When this happens, your next option is to pay a visit to that equipment and debug the issue locally. This situation typically requires the user to travel, which costs time and other valued resources. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">SynLink PDUs provide you with a simple solution. Using relay switches, the PDU can cold boot your computer. If that fails, you can use the PDU’s console server to access the console and recover your system.</span></p>
<h2>What is a console server and why is it an out-of-band solution?</h2>

<p>In this guide, I will show you how you can configure your SynLink PDU as a console server. A console server is simply a device that gives you remote, out-of-band access to your host’s command line (also referred to as shell/console/terminal). A console server accomplishes this by tapping into your host’s other method of communication: <em>Serial Port</em>.</p>
<p>Serial communication is ubiquitous and it is always accessible regardless of the device’s internet connectivity. SynLink PDU gives you remote access to this serial communication, thus giving you a secondary out-of-band communication in case your primary connection fails.</p>

<h2>Setting up the Console Server</h2>

<p>Many of today's computers no longer provide a dedicated serial port. However, most do have a USB port which you can use to access the console. You just need to perform a  few extra steps on your target computer, which I describe below:</p>

<li>Using a USB male-to-male cable, connect the USB port of your device to the USB <em>COM</em> port on the SynLink PDU.</li>

<h2>Modem Status and Allowed Phone Numbers </h2>
<p>The web interface is the easiest way to display status and configure the 4G LTE modem. Using your favorite Web browser, access the web interface via the IP address of the PDU.</p>

<li>Navigate to the <em>SMS Configuration</em> section: Network-&gt;SMS</li>
<li>You should see two sections. The <em>Status and Configuration</em> section should automatically refresh and show you all important modem statistics (i.e. Cell Phone number, Signal Strength, etc.). Click <em>Refresh</em> to update the status. Click the <em>Help Icon (?) </em>for definition of each field.</li>

<p>Load shedding is a method to remove load from an electrical power system where the system is at risk of outage due to demand strains, unplanned events, or equipment damage. </p>
<p>A number of events can require the use of load shedding, including infrastructure outages, limited on-site diesel generator capacity, increasing levels of demand,  unstable environmental conditions, and others.  </p>

<p>ATS (Auto Transfer Switch) capable PDUs have two inlets and ensure continuous distribution of electrical power from one of two power sources to it's outlets. Secondary power sources may be from alternate sources such as on-site diesel generators with limited power capacity.</p>
<p>ATS PDUs configured with primary power sources on inlet A, and secondary/alternate power sources on inlet B can notify and automate load shedding on primary power source loss. </p>

<p><strong></strong>Lower voltage conditions can be problematic for select power supplies. Short duration reduction in RMS voltage can be caused by a short circuit, overload, or starting of electric motors. Voltage dips occur when RMS voltage decreases between 10 and 90 percent of nominal voltage for on half cycle up to a minute. Set up triggers to prevent issues due to voltage drops, and to shut down power hungry equipment.</p>

Email Setup for SynLink PDUs

<p><span style="font-size: 15px;">AutoPing monitors unreliable networking equipment, detects issues with network stability, and (as a bonus feature) can be used for proximity detection of wireless devices. This feature is built-in to all SynLink PDUs.</span></p>
<p>The feature works by sending periodic ping requests to devices on the network. When ping fails, the event is logged and immediate action can be taken like sending an email alert, switching an outlet, power cycling a group of outlets, or sending a custom API call to a 3rd party application.</p>
<p>We've found this feature to be advantageous in the following applications.</p>

<p>As smart devices get smarter, device lock-ups get more common. This is especially true in the IoT connected world we live in today.</p>

<p>The TV is connected to outlet #3 of a SynLink Switched Pro+ PDU. If the smart TV fails to respond to three ping requests from the PDU, the TV's outlet is power cycled and an email is sent to the Network Admin for immediate investigation</p>
<p>The AutoPing monitor continues to send ping requests in the background after the outlet has been power cycled expecting the TV to come back online. When the TV boots up and responds again, the AutoPing status is set back to an OK state and the cycle repeats. </p>

<h2><b>Application: <span style="color: #ff2a00;">Watchdog for external network access (e.g., the Internet).</span></b></h2>
<p>Pinging the gateway (router) to an external network is not always enough to detect a problem. Autoping can be set up to ping multiple IP addresses simultaneously.</p>
<p>An example where this might be useful is with the following network topology:</p>

<p>SynLink PDU &lt;--&gt; Managed Switch &lt;--&gt; Router Gateway &lt;--&gt; The Internet</p>
</blockquote>
<p>In some failure modes, the router and switch may still respond to ping while in a locked-up state. </p>
<p>Solution: set up AutoPing to monitor the IP addresses of the managed switch, router, AND a device on an external network (Internet).</p>
<p>In this example, we chose to ping Google servers on the external network. It is assumed that something went wrong on the internal network if the AutoPing status on google.com becomes unreachable. The PDU attempts recovery by power cycling all networking equipment.</p>

Luckily for you, we have taken the time to consider the most common PDU failure modes. <br><br>Predictive Failure Analysis is the process of measuring and analyzing system characteristics to predict failures before they occur.</p>
<p>We have applied this concept to our new SynLink series PDUs from the start of the design process. SynLink PDUs have built-in self-monitoring features to alert you before issues arise. We believe this makes SynLink the best smart PDU on the market.<br><br>Let us explain… </p>
<h4><strong>Relay Health Monitor</strong></h4>
<p>Smart switched PDUs use mechanical power relays to control power at the outlets. There's no argument that relays are an additional point of failure in the power distribution path and some system admins opt out of the benefits for this reason alone. We believe we have a solution.<br><br>Our engineers at Synaccess have developed an industry-first Relay Health Monitor through collaboration with the Panasonic Relay Engineering team. The Panasonic Industrial team brings their power relay expertise and a deep understanding of relay failure modes to the table. They helped to inform our proprietary hardware and firmware designs for all SynLink Switched PDUs.<br><br>The Relay Health Monitor autonomously collects sensor data on all built-in relays. Threshold limits are set on this data to accurately assess the health of the relay and predict issues before they occur. This data can be obtained directly on the PDU's web interface in the 'Diagnostics' tab.<br><br>Additionally, built-in voltage sensors are included behind each relay in the PDU. If a relay does fail, the voltage sensors will detect and immediately raise a flag. <br><br>The Relay Health Monitor is a standard feature for all SynLink Switched PDUs.</p>
<h4><strong>Network Watchdog</strong></h4>
<p>The Network Watchdog works in the background to periodically monitor all network interfaces for activity. Activity signals a properly working PDU. If a long period of inactivity is detected, the network interface is forced to restart in an attempt to recover.</p>
<p>Two network interfaces are monitored out of the box. The ethernet network interface and the fault-tolerant Controller Area Network (CAN) interface used for internal sensor communications.<br><br>The Network Watchdog is a standard feature for all SynLink PDUs.</p>
<h4><strong>Circuit Breaker Trip Detection</strong></h4>
<p>SynLink's built-in Event-Action tool can be configured to send alerts or switch outlets when power consumption is near the threshold of a branch circuit breaker. <br><br>Immediate alerts can be sent via email, SNMP trap, or custom webhooks when a circuit breaker trips. When set up properly, these automated notifications can significantly reduce your MTTR (Mean Time to Repair).</p>
<h4><strong>Power Supply Fail-Over Detection</strong></h4>
<p>One of the most common issues that cause a circuit breaker to trip is when a server power supply fails. On a server with dual redundant power supplies, the drop in load of the failing power supply will be taken over by the other power supply. SynLink PDUs utilize current metering at each outlet to detect this scenario. The Event-Action tool can be configured to quickly detect power supply failures and quickly alert you of the issue via email, SNMP trap notifications, or custom webhooks.</p>

<p><em>Summary</em><em><br></em>Single Corded IT equipment is provided power redundancy by connecting to an Automatic Transfer Switch (ATS) Power Distribution Unit which accepts two inputs from redundant power sources. The ATS PDU maintains power to connected equipment by switching to an active backup power source if the primary source goes down.</p>
<p>Many rackmount servers, switches and other IT rackmount equipment have redundant power supplies (dual-corded). Equipment with one power supply (single-corded) are susceptible to power failures. The single-corded equipment is not utilizing power source redundancy. </p>
<p>SynLink ATS (Automatic Transfer Switch) PDUs is the solution. Two power sources can be fed as inputs into the ATS PDU. Single-corded equipment is connected to the ATS PDU output receptacles. Failure of the primary power source results in the ATS PDU automatically detecting and switching to the secondary power source without a noticeable interruption at the outlets. Redundant power sources can now be utilized for IT equipment with single power supplies.</p>

<p><br>The IoT network-enabled device that reports sensor data crashes repeatedly from an unknown issue. It also does not have a remote management card or remote access card to manage and recover the device. The setup requires manual intervention to restart and recover, costing time and money. </p>
<p><em><br></em>With a SynLink Power Distribution Unit, the built-in <em><strong>AutoPing</strong></em> feature is configured to monitor the ping status of the troubled device. Using the IoT device's LAN IPV4 address, the PDU pings the address at a periodic rate and triggers multiple user-defined actions when there is no response.</p>
